Archival Overview
Hafsid Sultan (1284–1295 AD) who recovered Tunis from the usurpation of Ibn Abi Umara, signed commercial treaties with Aragon and Genoa, and patronized religious institutions.
Biographical Record
Abu Hafs Umar I was a younger son of the founding Hafsid Sultan Abu Zakariya Yahya. Following the violent usurpation of the imposter Ibn Abi Umara in Tunis, Abu Hafs rallied the loyalist forces, recaptured Tunis in 1284, and re-established legitimate Hafsid rule.
His eleven-year reign restored maritime commerce across the Mediterranean, regularized diplomatic treaties with the Crown of Aragon and Italian republics, and supported the construction of religious colleges throughout the medina of Tunis.
