Archival Overview
One of the greatest Hafsid Sultans of Tunis (1394–1434) who repelled Christian crusader assaults, restored the monumental Roman aqueduct of Zaghouan, and founded colleges and hospitals.
Biographical Record
Ascending the Hafsid throne in 1394, Abu Faris Abd al-Aziz al-Mutawakkil enjoyed a legendary forty-year golden reign. He reunited all Ifriqiya, Constantine, and Tripoli under central administration, establishing security on trade routes across the Sahara and the Mediterranean.
He conducted massive public engineering works, restoring the ancient Roman aqueduct carrying spring water from Mount Zaghouan to Tunis and Carthage, founded public hospitals (Maristan), and built the Madrasa al-Uthmaniyya. When European piratical raids threatened Jerba in 1432, his coastal defenses crushed the attackers.
