Archival Overview
The final Almohad Caliph (1266–1269), whose defeat and death during the siege of Marrakech by Marinid Sultan Abu Yaqub Yusuf marked the definitive end of the Almohad Caliphate.
Biographical Record
Abu Dabbus Idris al-Wathiq was a great-grandson of Caliph Abd al-Mu'min. With the Almohad state reduced to Marrakech and its surrounding plains, he forged an alliance with the Marinid sultan Abu Yaqub Yusuf, seizing Marrakech from his cousin al-Murtada in 1266.
However, Abu Dabbus turned against the Marinids, seeking to reassert complete independence. Sultan Abu Yaqub Yusuf laid siege to Marrakech, and on September 8, 1269, Abu Dabbus was killed leading a desperate countercharge outside the city walls, concluding 147 years of Almohad caliphal rule over the western Maghreb.
