Biographical Record
Abu al-Walid Muhammad ibn Rushd, known in Islamic legal history as 'Ibn Rushd al-Jadd' (the Grandfather), was the supreme jurist of the Maliki school during the Almoravid Empire. Deeply revered by Sultan Ali ibn Yusuf, he regularly traveled to Marrakech to advise the imperial cabinet on constitutional and legal affairs.
He authored 'Al-Bayan wa-l-Tahsil' (The Exposition and Derivation), an encyclopedic twenty-volume masterwork that codified the legal precedents of the Maliki school. His judicial authority unified legal jurisprudence across Morocco and Islamic Spain, laying the intellectual foundation for his grandson, the philosopher Averroes.
