Archival Overview
Youthful Marinid Sultan (1308–1310) who successfully suppressed rebel princes, recovered Ceuta from Nasrid control, and restored internal stability across northern Morocco.
Biographical Record
Abu al-Rabi Sulayman ascended the throne at age nineteen amidst turbulent civil strife following the assassination of his grandfather Abu Yaqub Yusuf. Demonstrating remarkable maturity and diplomatic tact, he pacified rival tribal leaders and made peace with the Zayyanids of Tlemcen.
His greatest military triumph was the recovery of the vital Mediterranean stronghold of Ceuta from the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada in 1309. He died prematurely from illness at Taza in November 1310, leaving the throne to his brother Abu Said Uthman II.
