Archival Overview
The last fighting Wattasid ruler, who escaped Saadian captivity, secured Ottoman military backing from Salah Rais in Algiers, recaptured Fez in 1554, and died in battle at Tadla.
Biographical Record
Abu Hassun Ali was the uncle of Sultan Ahmad al-Wattasi. When the rising Saadian dynasty under Mohammed ash-Sheikh captured Fez in 1549, Abu Hassun fled to Europe and Ottoman Algiers seeking military assistance. In early 1554, supported by an Ottoman janissary corps led by Salah Rais, he re-entered Fez and was proclaimed sultan.
His second reign lasted mere months; Mohammed ash-Sheikh reorganized his southern armies and defeated Abu Hassun at the decisive Battle of Tadla in September 1554, where Abu Hassun fell fighting bravely, extinguishing the Wattasid line.
