Archival Overview
Celebrated Sufi mystical poet whose vernacular zajal and muwashshah songs bridged classical Andalusian mysticism with North African and Middle Eastern spiritual song.
Biographical Record
Renouncing his aristocratic Andalusian inheritance to follow Sufi master Ibn Sab'in in Morocco, Abu al-Hasan al-Shushtari wandered through the alleys of Béjaïa, Tlemcen, and Marrakesh wearing a beggar's rags and playing musical castanets while singing divine love.
He revolutionized mystical poetry by writing in the vernacular dialect and colloquial zajal meters rather than strictly classical Arabic, ensuring his devotional songs were sung by commoners and dervishes across the Maghreb down to the present day.
