Biographical Record

Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili (1196–1258 CE) studied in Fez and under the great Moroccan hermit Abd al-Salam ibn Mashish before traveling to Tunis and Alexandria.

Unlike orders emphasizing monastic beggary, al-Shadhili instructed disciples to dress cleanly, pursue normal trades, and cultivate inward detachment from worldly wealth.
