Archival Overview
Vigorous Almohad Caliph (1242–1248) who launched energetic counter-offensives to reunite Morocco and western Algeria, killed in an ambush by Yaghmurasen near Oujda.
Biographical Record
Abu al-Hasan al-Said al-Mutadid assumed the Almohad caliphal throne upon his brother al-Rashid's death. Displaying extraordinary energy and military resolve, al-Said subdued unruly tribal confederations across the Haouz, checked early Marinid expansion, and forced the Hafsid ruler of Tunis to acknowledge his nominal caliphal suzerainty.
In 1248, he organized a massive imperial expedition eastward to crush the Zayyanids of Tlemcen. While crossing near Oujda along the River Za, his vanguard was ambushed by Yaghmurasen ibn Zayan; al-Said was slain in his imperial tent, an event that dealt a catastrophic blow to the Almohad empire.
