"O night of love, when will your morning come? Will it arrive only on the day of resurrection?"

Archival Overview

Blind master lyricist of Kairouan whose romantic masterpiece 'Ya Laylu al-Sabbu Mata Ghaduhu' (O Night, When Will the Lover's Dawn Arrive?) became one of the most famous love poems in Arabic history.

Biographical Record

Ali ibn Abd al-Ghani al-Husari was born blind in Kairouan, yet his extraordinary auditory memory and sensitivity allowed him to memorize the entirety of classical poetry and the Qur'an by childhood, becoming a court poet to the Zirids.

His immortal qasida Ya Laylu al-Sabbu was emulated by over two hundred poets across eight centuries, including Ahmad Shawqi. Driven from Kairouan by warfare, he lived in Ceuta and Tangier under Almoravid patronage.
