Thirteenth Idrisid Sultan and profound scholar-jurist, who abdicated his throne to his brother Al-Hasan II and died fighting as a common soldier in Andalusia.
Biographical Record
Abu al-Ays Ahmad was an intellectual and devout monarch who ruled northern Morocco from 948 to 954 AD. An expert in hadith, grammar, and Quranic exegesis, he preferred the company of scholars to the pomp of the royal court.
When the Umayyad Caliph demanded the surrender of the port of Tangier, Abu al-Ays resisted with dignity before deciding to abdicate in favor of his younger brother Al-Hasan II. Crossing to Islamic Spain as a simple volunteer warrior, he died heroically on the northern frontiers defending Muslim communities.
