Archival Overview
Foundational 10th-century historian and Hadith master of Kairouan, author of Tabaqat Ulama Ifriqiya, the irreplaceable primary biographical chronicle of early Islamic North Africa.
Biographical Record
Abu al-Arab al-Tamimi descended from a prominent Arab family of Kairouan. He devoted his life to gathering oral traditions, legal responsa, and biographical notices of scholars, judges, ascetics, and statesmen who flourished in Tunisia from the Arab conquest through the Aghlabid era.
His celebrated masterwork, Tabaqat Ulama Ifriqiya wa-Tunis, remains the indispensable foundation for all modern historiography of medieval Tunisia. Imprisoned briefly during the Fatimid revolution for defending orthodox Sunni scholars, he was revered by the people of Kairouan until his death in 945 AD.
