Archival Overview

Master Moroccan artisan and woodcarver who directed the execution of the intricate carved cedarwood ceilings and calligraphic stuccowork of the Saadian Tombs and El Badi Palace in Marrakech.

Biographical Record

Abu al-Abbas Ahmad al-Daqqun was the leading master craftsman (Amin al-Hinna'iyyin) in Marrakech during the reign of Ahmad al-Mansur. Entrusted with the ornamentation of the royal mausoleums and reception halls, he perfected the intricate carved cedar dome of the Chamber of the Twelve Pillars in the Saadian Tombs.

His mastery of geometric interlacing (Tawriq) and calligraphic Quranic bands represents the summit of post-Andalusian Moroccan decorative craftsmanship.
