Archival Overview
Antwerp cartographer and humanist scholar who created the world's first modern atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1570), and was the first to propose the concept of continental drift.
Biographical Record
Educated in classical humanities and mathematics, Ortelius worked as an illuminator and map colorist in Antwerp before joining the Guild of Saint Luke. Recognizing that scholars lacked a unified, standardized compendium of global maps, he spent a decade collecting and editing contemporary cartographic surveys.
In May 1570, he published Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World) with 70 maps engraved by Frans Hogenberg, revolutionizing global exploration and commerce. In his 1596 Thesaurus Geographicus, he perceptively noted that the Americas had been 'torn away from Europe and Africa by earthquakes and floods'.
