Biographical Record

Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907-1972) fut l'un des penseurs religieux juifs les plus profonds du XXe siècle. Échappé de justesse à la Shoah qui anéantit sa famille en Pologne, il devint professeur d'éthique et de mystique juive au Jewish Theological Seminary de New York.

Convaincu que la piété religieuse exige une action sociale courageuse, il défila au premier rang aux côtés de Martin Luther King Jr. lors de la marche historique de Selma à Montgomery en 1965, déclarant : « J'avais l'impression que mes jambes priaient ». Il fut également cofondateur de l'organisation Clergy and Laymen Concerned About Vietnam.
