Foremost statesman of the Albanian National Awakening who founded the League of Prizren in 1878 to prevent the partition of Albanian-inhabited territories by European powers.
Biographical Record
Abdyl Frashëri was born on August 17, 1839, in Frashër, the eldest of the three legendary Frashëri brothers. Serving as an Albanian deputy in the first Ottoman Parliament in 1877, he recognized that the Treaty of San Stefano threatened to dismember Albanian territories among neighboring Balkan states.
On June 10, 1878, Frashëri organized the historic League of Prizren, serving as head of its foreign affairs committee. He traveled on a diplomatic mission across Berlin, Paris, Vienna, and Rome, presenting memoranda to Otto von Bismarck and European foreign ministers demanding autonomy and territorial integrity for Albania. Following Ottoman military suppression of the League in 1881, he was imprisoned for years in Castle Prizren and Istanbul.
