Biographical Record
Abdulwahid Kleist Sykes was born in 1924 in Dar es Salaam into an influential coastal merchant and political family. Serving with the British Army in India and Burma during World War II, his exposure to international liberation struggles deepened his commitment to African self-determination.
Elected President of the Tanganyika African Association (TAA) in 1950, Sykes drafted the new constitution that transformed the cultural welfare body into a militant political party. In 1952, he introduced Julius Nyerere to the TAA leadership, actively stepping aside to support Nyerere's election as president in 1953. On July 7, 1954 (Saba Saba), Sykes co-founded TANU at his family home in Dar es Salaam, providing the early financial backing for independence.
