Biographical Record

Abdul-Munim al-Rifai was born in Safed into an eminent scholarly family and studied literature at the American University of Beirut. Joining the diplomatic corps of Jordan under King Abdullah I, he was appointed Jordan's first ambassador to the United States and the United Nations in 1956, and later served as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Rifai served twice as Prime Minister of Jordan (in 1969 and 1970) during a period of intense regional military crises.
