Archival Overview

First Olympic medalist in Moroccan history, who won the silver medal in the historic marathon at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games in an epic duel behind barefoot champion Abebe Bikila.

Biographical Record

A soldier in the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces born in the Rif foothills near Taounate, Rhadi Ben Abdesselam won the International Cross Country Championship in Glasgow in 1960. At the 1960 Rome Olympics, he competed in both the 10,000 meters and the marathon.

In the torch-lit marathon winding past the Colosseum and the Appian Way, Radi and Ethiopia's Abebe Bikila broke away from the world field, running shoulder to shoulder until the final 500 meters. Radi took the silver medal, securing Morocco's first ever Olympic medal.
