Archival Overview
16th-century Sufi ecstatic and sage whose rhymed vernacular quatrains (Ruba'iyat) encapsulated Moroccan popular wisdom, moral ethics, and spiritual introspection.
Biographical Record
Born near Azemmour into a Berber family from Tit, Sidi Abderrahman El Majdoub studied in Fez before adopting an itinerant lifestyle of ecstatic spiritual detachment ('jadhb'). Wandering between Meknes, Salé, and Marrakesh, he spoke in short, profound rhyming quatrains.
His verses, transmitted orally across five centuries throughout Morocco and western Algeria, critique human greed, hypocritical leaders, and fake friends while teaching patience, self-reliance, and faith in divine providence.
