Biographical Record

Hajj Abdelkrim Rais was the premier rabab player in the Islamic world. Succeeding his mentor Mohammed al-Brihi in 1945 as director of the legendary Fez Andalusian Orchestra, Rais directed the ensemble with consummate distinction for fifty years.

He served as director of the Dar Adiyel Music Conservatory in Fez and transcribed the complete poetic texts and musical structures of the eleven Moroccan Andalusian Nawbat into his definitive manual, Al-Ala: Tarikh, Wasat wa Nusus.
