Biographical Record
A schoolteacher from Tlemcen, Abdelkader Guerroudj, known as 'Djillali', was a senior leader of the Algerian Communist Party (PCA). In 1956, he played a central role in negotiating the historic agreement with the FLN integrating communist partisan units into the National Liberation Army.
Arrested in 1957, both he and his wife Jacqueline were condemned to death by a French military tribunal. Saved from the guillotine by an international campaign of intellectuals led by Jean-Paul Sartre and François Mauriac, he survived to see independent Algeria, remaining a steadfast voice for social justice.
