Archival Overview
Master Algerian dramatist and director who revolutionized modern Arab theater by adapting the traditional North African storytelling circle (Halqa), assassinated for his defense of humanism.
Biographical Record
Abdelkader Alloula studied theater in France before dedicating his life to creating authentic popular Algerian theater in Oran. Serving as director of the Théâtre Régional d'Oran (TRO), he wrote and directed theatrical masterworks in spoken Algerian colloquial Arabic.
His legendary trilogy—'El Ghoula' (The Ogre, 1975), 'El Agwal' (The Words, 1980), and 'El Adjouad' (The Generous, 1985)—abandoned the Italian proscenium stage to recreate the traditional circular Halqa storytelling format. Tragically gunned down on his way to his theater in March 1994, he died a martyr for art and enlightenment.
