Biographical Record
Shaykh Abdelhamid Ben Badis was born in Constantine into an ancient aristocratic family of scholarly distinction. After graduating from the University of Ez-Zitouna in Tunis, he returned to Algeria dedicated to educational reform, establishing an extensive network of modern free schools teaching Arabic, Islamic thought, and modern sciences to Algerian boys and girls.
In 1931, he co-founded and presided over the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulema, coining the immortal creed: 'Islam is our religion, Arabic is our language, and Algeria is our homeland.'
