Beloved dean of Tunisian folklorists, journalist, and radio pioneer whose Sunday evening broadcasts Hikayat El Aroui preserved thousands of oral tales, proverbs, and philosophical allegories.
Biographical Record
Born in Monastir and educated at Sadiki College and the Zitouna, Abdelaziz El Aroui was a prolific investigative journalist and editor of Al-Zahra and Al-Nahda. In 1938, he joined Radio Tunis, creating the legendary weekly program Hikayat El Aroui (Stories of El Aroui).
Armed with a warm, gravelly voice and incomparable comedic timing, he recounted traditional Maghrebi folk wisdom, moral parables, and peasant wit in rich, expressive Tunisian dialect. For thirty-three years, families gathered around the radio to hear his stories, which were later adapted into landmark television series.
