Archival Overview
Legendary Sudanese musical virtuoso, poet, and cultural diplomat whose performances of classical Arabic qasidas and Sudanese folk songs championed pan-African unity and peace.
Biographical Record
Born on the Red Sea coast in Port Sudan, Abdel Karim el Kabli mastered the oud and Arabic classical poetry in his youth, joining the Ministry of Justice as an inspector while composing music that broke artistic boundaries.
His 1960 performance of Asia wa Ifriqiya (Asia and Africa) in front of visiting Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser became an immortal anthem of the Non-Aligned Movement. For six decades, his velvety baritone and musicological research bridged Arabic and African cultures.
