Archival Overview
Spiritual founder, legal ideologue, and theological leader of the Almoravid movement whose monastic discipline, Maliki orthodoxy, and charismatic leadership forged a global empire.
Biographical Record
Abdallah ibn Yasin was born into the Gazula Berber tribe of the Souss. After studying for seven years in Andalusia under the greatest Maliki jurists, he was chosen by Yahya ibn Ibrahim in 1039 to accompany him into the Mauritanian Sahara to preach among the nomadic Sanhaja.
Establishing an ascetic ribat on an island off the Atlantic coast, Ibn Yasin instilled iron religious discipline and egalitarian brotherhood among his disciples, calling them Al-Murabitun. Leading them north out of the desert, he conquered Sijilmasa and the Atlas, falling in holy battle against the heretical Barghawata in 1059.
