Archival Overview
Almohad Caliph (1232–1242) who strove to restore imperial discipline in Morocco amidst the rise of the Hafsids in Tunis and the Marinid nomads in northern Morocco.
Biographical Record
Abu Muhammad Abd al-Wahid II al-Rashid succeeded his father Idris al-Ma'mun during a period of acute imperial disintegration. To reconcile with the conservative Berber establishment, al-Rashid pragmatically restored formal deference to the Almohad founder Ibn Tumart while retaining Maliki judicial flexibility.
His decade-long reign was consumed by constant military campaigns against rebelling governors, the nascent Marinid tribes invading the plains of Fez, and rebellious governors in Sijilmassa. In December 1242, he tragically drowned in a palace pool at the Agdal gardens in Marrakech.
