Archival Overview
Almohad caliph who ruled briefly in 1224 following the death of Yusuf II al-Mustansir, overthrown by rival dynastic factions in Marrakech.
Biographical Record
Abu Muhammad Abd al-Wahid I was the son of the great caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf. Following the unexpected death of the youthful Caliph Yusuf II al-Mustansir without male heirs in early 1224, the senior Almohad viziers and grandees in Marrakech proclaimed the elderly Abd al-Wahid as caliph.
However, his accession provoked immediate opposition from provincial governors in al-Andalus, led by his grand-nephew Abu Muhammad Abdallah al-Adil. Within nine months, Marrakech palace guards deposed and assassinated him, earning him the historical epithet 'al-Makhlu' (the Deposed), marking the onset of the fatal Almohad succession civil wars.
