Biographical Record
Elected in 784 to succeed his father Abd al-Rahman ibn Rustam, Abd al-Wahhab governed the central Maghreb from Tahert for nearly four decades. His administration was characterized by strict egalitarian accountability, where the ruler was subject to review by a consultative council (shura).
He established trade outposts linking Tahert to the Niger River and the M'zab valley, institutionalizing an oasis economy. His capital became an international center of translation and astronomy where diverse sects lived in harmony.
