Archival Overview
Major 20th-century Iraqi poet who pioneered social realism and mythological symbolism in modern Arabic free verse.
Biographical Record
Abd al-Wahhab al-Bayati was born in Baghdad and educated at the Higher Teachers Training College. Together with Nazik al-Malaika and Badr Shakir al-Sayyab, he was a pivotal architect of the modern Arabic free verse movement in the late 1940s, infusing his poetry with socialist commitment and human solidarity.
Exiled for much of his life due to his staunch opposition to royalist and Ba'athist repression, Bayati lived in Moscow, Cairo, Madrid, and Damascus. His verse, rich in mythological archetypes such as Tammuz and Aisha, transformed modern Arabic political poetry into a profound universal meditation on exile, martyrdom, and rebirth.
