Archival Overview

Persian-born Islamic jurist and statesman who founded the Rustamid Dynasty in Tahert, Algeria, establishing a prosperous, cosmopolitan Ibadi democratic imamate that ruled central North Africa for 130 years.

Biographical Record

Abd al-Rahman ibn Rustam (c. 735–788 CE) was a brilliant scholar of the moderate Ibadi branch of Islam, educated in Basra before moving to Kairouan. When Abbasid governors expelled the Ibadis from Tunisia, Ibn Rustam led his disciples west into the central Algerian plateau.

In 777 CE, local Zenata and Sanhaja Berber tribes unanimously elected him Imam and founded the city of Tahert (modern Tiaret). Under Ibn Rustam's egalitarian rule, Tahert flourished as the 'Mesopotamia of the Maghreb', boasting magnificent libraries, thriving Saharan trade routes to Ghana, and a welcoming asylum for Persian, Arab, and Berber scholars.
