Archival Overview
Visionary Syrian political philosopher whose landmark book 'The Nature of Despotism' (Taba'i al-Istibdad) diagnosed authoritarian tyranny.
Biographical Record
Abd al-Rahman al-Kawakibi was born into a prominent family of scholars in Aleppo and trained in Islamic jurisprudence, Arabic literature, Turkish, and law. He founded pioneering reformist newspapers in Aleppo, including Al-Shahba and Al-Itidal, which were shut down by Ottoman authorities for fearlessly exposing administrative corruption and autocratic abuses.
Fleeing to Cairo in 1899, Kawakibi published two revolutionary masterpieces: Taba'i al-Istibdad wa-Masari' al-Isti'bad (The Nature of Despotism and the Demise of Enslavement), an incisive sociological critique of how tyranny degrades morality, intellect, and religion; and Umm al-Qura, proposing a pan-Islamic congress to revive the Arab nation through democratic education and rational renewal.
