Archival Overview
Nationalist leader who overthrew the Hashemite monarchy in the 14 July 1958 revolution to establish the Republic of Iraq.
Biographical Record
Abd al-Karim Qasim was born in Baghdad and rose through the ranks of the Royal Iraqi Army, serving with distinction in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. In 1958, as leader of the clandestine Free Officers movement, he led the 14 July military coup that abolished the monarchy and proclaimed Iraq an independent republic.
As Prime Minister, Qasim enacted sweeping social reforms: he issued Law No. 80 reclaiming unexploited oil concessions from foreign oil companies, distributed land to hundreds of thousands of impoverished peasants, built the vast working-class city of Madinat al-Thawra (Sadr City), and enacted progressive family law protecting women's rights before being overthrown and executed during the 1963 Ba'athist coup.
