Biographical Record
Born in Tlemcen and educated in the scholarly hubs of the central Maghreb, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Karim al-Maghili was a staunch Maliki legal scholar. After theological controversies in the Touat oasis, he journeyed across the Sahara to Kano, Katsina, and Gao.
He served as the premier constitutional and judicial advisor to Askia the Great, Emperor of Songhai, writing the celebrated governance manual Ajwibat al-Maghili (The Replies of al-Maghili), which profoundly structured Islamic legal thought in the Sahel.
