Archival Overview
The final Marinid Sultan (1420–1465), whose massacre of his Wattasid viziers and appointment of a Jewish grand vizier provoked the explosive 1465 Fez uprising, ending 250 years of Marinid dynastic rule.
Biographical Record
Abd al-Haqq II succeeded as an infant under the regency of the Wattasid vizier Abu Zakariya Yahya. Growing up under heavy Wattasid tutelage, he staged a bloody palace coup in 1458, slaughtering most of the Wattasid family to assume direct personal rule.
Facing severe economic hardship and Portuguese coastal incursions, he appointed a trusted Jewish financier, Harun ibn Battash, as his prime minister (vizier). This unprecedented decision inflamed populist outrage among the Idrisid Shurafa and scholars of Fez. On May 18, 1465, an insurrection engulfed Fez; Abd al-Haqq was captured and executed near Bab Bou Jeloud, concluding Marinid sovereignty.
