Archival Overview

Founding chieftain of the Zenata Berber Marinid Dynasty who led his nomadic confederacy from eastern pasturelands into northern Morocco, initiating the overthrow of Almohad power.

Biographical Record

Abd al-Haqq I ibn Mihyu was the legendary patriarch and first recorded supreme leader of the Banu Marin, a powerful Zenata nomadic confederacy. Following the catastrophic Almohad defeat at Las Navas de Tolosa (1212), Abd al-Haqq recognized imperial exhaustion and led his mounted clans across the Moulouya river into the Moroccan agricultural heartland.

Defeating several Almohad punitive columns sent from Fez, he fell heroically in battle near Taza in 1217, leaving his sons an unified military vanguard destined to conquer Morocco and establish the Marinid Sultanate.
