Iconic American jazz vocalist, composer, and civil rights activist who collaborated with Max Roach on the landmark 1960 album We Insist! Freedom Now Suite.
Biographical Record
Anna Marie Wooldridge was born in Chicago and raised on a Michigan farm. Adopting the stage name Abbey Lincoln on the advice of her manager, she emerged in the 1950s as a glamorous club singer before turning her artistry into a fierce vehicle for racial justice.
In 1960, Lincoln provided the searing, wordless vocal screams on Max Roach's 'We Insist! Freedom Now Suite', a defining musical masterpiece of the Civil Rights Movement. She also starred opposite Sidney Poitier in 'For Love of Ivy' (1968) and produced acclaimed, philosophical songwriting well into her seventies.
