Biographical Record
Abbasuddin Ahmed was born on October 27, 1901, in Cooch Behar. Possessing an extraordinarily clear, sonorous voice with an instinctive mastery of traditional regional intonations, Ahmed was discovered by Kazi Nazrul Islam and composer Himangshu Dutta in Calcutta.
Ahmed recorded hundreds of historic 78 rpm shellac discs with the Gramophone Company of India, introducing urban listeners to the mournful bullock-cart songs of Rangpur (Bhawaiya) and the sweeping riverine chants of boatmen (Bhatiyali). Collaborating closely with Nazrul Islam, he popularized modern Islamic devotional songs (Ghazals). His musical dynasty includes celebrated children Mustafa Zaman Abbasi and Ferdausi Rahman.
