Archival Overview
Charismatic commander of the Moroccan Army of Liberation (ALN) in the Rif and Middle Atlas mountains whose military operations forced France to concede Moroccan independence in 1956.
Biographical Record
Born in the Middle Atlas, Abbas Messaadi organized the armed resistance following the deposition and exile of Sultan Mohammed V by French authorities in 1953. In October 1955, his Moroccan Army of Liberation launched coordinated assaults on French garrisons across Taza, Boured, and Aknoul.
His military successes in the 'Triangle of Death' shattered colonial security and accelerated the return of the King. He was tragically assassinated in June 1956 amid political rivalries over the integration of liberation fighters into the Royal Armed Forces.
