"Reading alone creates a full man; reading multiplies one's life by the lives of all great minds in history."

Archival Overview

Monumental self-taught Egyptian writer, critic, philosopher, and parliamentarian who authored over one hundred books, famously celebrated for his psychological biographical series 'Al-Abqariyyat' (The Geniuses).

Biographical Record

Abbas Mahmoud al-Aqqad (1889–1964) grew up in Aswan and completed only primary school education. Through supernatural self-discipline and voracious reading, he mastered English, French, and classical Arabic, assembling a personal library of over 30,000 volumes in his Heliopolis apartment.

Al-Aqqad co-founded the innovative Diwan literary school with Ibrahim al-Mazini in 1921, liberating Arabic poetry from rigid ornamentation. As a fearless politician in the Wafd Party, he was imprisoned for nine months in 1930 for defending the constitution against King Fuad. His biographical series Al-Abqariyyat applied modern psychological analysis to the Prophet Muhammad, Umar, and classical heroes.
