"Art must not be a mere photograph of external things; it must be the revelation of internal spiritual rhythm."

Archival Overview

Indian artist and writer who founded the influential Bengal School of Art, creating the iconic patriotic painting Bharat Mata and championing pan-Asian aesthetic indigenism against British academicism.

Biographical Record

The nephew of Rabindranath Tagore, Abanindranath Tagore (1871–1951) served as vice-principal of the Government College of Art in Calcutta alongside E. B. Havell. Rejecting Western oil realism as foreign to the Indian spirit, he pioneered the delicate 'wash technique' inspired by Ajanta cave frescoes, Mughal miniatures, and Japanese ink masters like Okakura Tenshin.

In 1905, during the Swadeshi movement, he painted 'Bharat Mata'—depicting the motherland as a serene four-armed ascetic maiden holding food, cloth, a manuscript, and a rosary. His Bengal School trained an entire generation of modern Indian artists.
