Biographical Record
Abane Ramdane (1920–1957) emerged from French colonial prisons in 1955 to find the young revolution disorganized and fractured. With extraordinary organizational genius, he unified diverse political factions—reformists, communists, ulema, and militants—into a cohesive national liberation movement.
In August 1956, Abane convened the legendary Soummam Congress, drafting its historic platform that established two cardinal principles: the primacy of the political over the military, and the primacy of internal leadership over external delegates. He founded the revolutionary newspaper El Moudjahid and directed the 1957 Battle of Algiers before his tragic assassination in Morocco.
