Archival Overview
Distinguished Danish nuclear physicist awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1975 for discovering the connection between collective motion and particle motion in atomic nuclei.
Biographical Record
Aage Niels Bohr was born on June 19, 1922, in Copenhagen, the fourth son of theoretical physicist Niels Bohr. During World War II, he escaped Nazi-occupied Denmark with his father, serving as his junior secretary and assistant on the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos.
Returning to Denmark, Bohr collaborated with American physicist Ben Mottelson and Leo James Rainwater to formulate the unified collective model of the atomic nucleus, demonstrating that non-spherical nuclei rotate and deform collectively. For this foundational advance, Bohr, Mottelson, and Rainwater shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physics. He directed the Niels Bohr Institute from 1963 to 1970 and Nordita from 1975 to 1981.
