Biographical Record

A. Philip Randolph (1889-1979) fut la force syndicale et stratégique qui contraignit deux présidents des États-Unis à des décrets historiques. En 1925, il organisa la Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), premier syndicat de travailleurs noirs à signer un accord collectif majeur aux États-Unis.

En 1941, sa menace d'une marche de 100 000 Noirs sur la capitale poussa Franklin D. Roosevelt à signer l'Executive Order 8802 interdisant la discrimination dans les usines d'armement de guerre. En 1948, il obtint du président Truman la déségrégation complète des forces armées américaines. En 1963, il fut le doyen et président officiel de la Marche historique sur Washington pour l'emploi et la liberté.
