Eric Liddell, 'The Flying Scotsman', was an Olympic 400m champion and Scottish rugby international renowned for his unyielding Christian conviction, famously withdrawing from his signature 100m event at the 1924 Paris Olympics because the heats were held on a Sunday. Switching to the 400 meters, he won gold in a world record time before dedicating his life to missionary work in China, where he died in a Japanese civilian internment camp in 1945.
